The R-22 Freon Phase-Out: What DFW Homeowners Need to Know

The EPA's phase-out of R-22 refrigerant (commonly known as Freon) has fundamentally changed how we service older AC units. As of 2020, it is illegal to manufacture or import R-22 in the United States. This means the supply is dwindling, and the cost of recharging an old, leaking system has skyrocketed.

If you live in DFW and have an older unit, paying to recharge R-22 is often a bad investment. Instead, SCP Refrigeration recommends upgrading to a modern system that uses R-410A or newer, environmentally friendly refrigerants. Not only are newer systems more efficient, but you won't be hit with exorbitant refrigerant costs when a leak occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just put new refrigerant into my old R-22 system?

No, you cannot put modern refrigerants like R-410A directly into a system designed for R-22. The oils and operating pressures are different, and doing so will destroy the compressor.

Is it illegal to keep using my R-22 air conditioner?

It is not illegal to continue using your R-22 system. However, it is illegal for technicians to vent R-22 into the atmosphere, and due to supply shortages, repairing leaks and recharging the system is highly expensive.
